The Fashionable Teapot - Early Coalport Teawares 1796 - 1815

A bright and colourful display of early Coalport teapots from 30th April until 4th November 2007 at the Coalport ChinaMuseum, near Ironbridge, Shropshire gives a fascinating insight into the social history of tea drinking in Britain in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The unique exhibition shows a wide variety of different teapot shapes and will represent as closely as possible the full range of patterns used on Coalport porcelain in the early 19th century.  This will help to create a lasting record of the different styles that were used at the factory.

Porcelain teapots dating back to between 1796 and 1820 are on display, with examples by both John Rose and Thomas Rose and a selection from other factories such as Caughley and Worcester, providing comparisons and illustrating the styles that were influencing Coalport products.

Visitors are shown how the increasing affordability and popularity of tea among the middle classes created a demand for these attractive, but reasonably priced porcelain tea services.

One of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Coalport China Museum is open 10am-5pm seven days a week.  An Annual Ticket and Passport, which allows unlimited daytime admission to all ten of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums for 12 months, costs £14 per adult, £12.50 for senior citizens, £9.50 for students and children, and £46 for a family of two adults and three children aged up to 18 years in full time education.
