Victorian School Museum led (Winter) A  Victorian Teacher will deliver selected activities in our original School House. Teachers choose from a list of lessons available. We provide costumes for all children and 2 adults.

Victorian School Self led (Easter - October) The self taught session is the same as above, but you deliver the lesson with detailed resources and a museum based ‘Classroom Assistant’ to help.

Intaglio Printing Draw, etch and print pieces of work using Intaglio techniques and processes.  We can focus on pattern and designs found at the site for inspiration or the students can bring ready made designs eg Xmas cards, self portraits.

Costume Handling An opportunity to try on some items of costume and see how they affected the way you moved and what you could do.

Laundry Wash clothing using a dolly tub and posser. Wring it through a mangle and peg out on the line.  Smell the carbolic soap and lavender bags. Compare how hard it is compared to what we do today.

Candle Dipping Dip a modern candle in coloured waxes to create a unique design. Visit the Victorian Candle Factory to see how candles were made.

Brick Making (February – October) Hand make a brick using traditional tools and techniques, and experience the working conditions endured by child labourers in a Victorian Brickworks. Bricks are taken home and should be fired or varnished when dry.

Coalport China Museum - To book call Coalport Education Officer on 01952 686542

Coalport’s “Design and Make” Workshops explore techniques used in the production of ceramics. All work needs firing and is available for collection after approx 3 weeks, or we can arrange postage (extra charge).

On Glaze Painting - paint a design of your own on a plain white mug or plate that will then be fired to make it permanent.

Modelling Clay Faces - create a 3-D face in cream glazed finish.  It can be a self portrait, a famous person or a fantasy figure

Flower modelling - making and painting flowers using traditional techniques and some strange implements

Landscapes - using the inspiration of the Gorge or a drawing you have brought with you, make a plaque to hang on the wall

Containers - make coil or slab pots to your own design and shape

Sgraffito - Use the patterns you find in the collections to inspire you then scratch out a unique design on a clay bowl

Transfer design - Make an intaglio print to see how this method was used to produce designs on ceramic ware.  Then decorate a mug using a range of modern transfers.

Jackfield Tile Museum - To book contact Education Officer on 01952 884627

Jackfield workshops include a design and make activity using traditional Victorian techniques. Access to the museum is included.   All work needs firing and is available for collection after approx 3 weeks, or we can arrange postage (extra charge).

Workshop K/S Time Capacity Cost
Tube lining tile decoration (wall tiles). A traditional technique where the designs is outlined with liquid clay and then the coloured sections are infilled with coloured slip before the tile is fired to achieve a high gloss finish.

Encaustic tile (floor tiles).  One of the earliest techniques for producing a multicoloured design.  The pattern is carved out of the mould and clay or slip is used to give the different sections colour.  After drying the excess is scraped away and the tile is fired to a biscuit finish
